Neighbourhood disputes

Living in close proximity to your neighbours is not always easy. Disputes can arise over issues such as trees, dogs, noise, parking or fences.

Using a lawyer to resolve these issues should be a last resort. A legal dispute can be expensive, stressful and time consuming.

In the first instance, always try resolving a dispute with your neighbour informally. If this approach does not work, think about writing a letter to your neighbour setting out your concerns.

If the issue is still not resolved, you may wish to consider mediation. This is a voluntary, confidential process with an impartial mediator.  It encourages cooperative problem solving and preserves relationships.

You may also consider using a conflict resolution service.

Remember that in most cases you will have to continue living next door to your neighbour so it is best to try to find a solution which you can both live with.
